Heart Rate - What is Normal for You?

First of all what is heart rate? How do you know if your heart rate is normal and what do you do if it is not?

Your heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute. It can be measured by feeling your pulse mostly at the wrist or neck. To take your pulse to get your heart rate, first turn the palm side of your hand facing up. Then place your index and middle fingers of you other hand on your wrist about 1 inch below the base of your hand. Press your fingers down until you feel a throbbing. That is your pulse. Count the number of beats for 10 seconds using a clock or watch second hand. Then multiply that number by 6 and this will give you your heart rate for 1 minute. That tells you how many times your heart beats in a minute.

You can also get your heart rate by placing your finger gently on one side of your neck until you feel a pulse, and then do as you did for your wrist.

What is normal for a heart rate? While you are resting, a normal heart rate is about 60-90. If your heart rate at resting is between 40-50 beats per minute, you are in top condition. If it is between 50-60 beats per minute, you are in good condition. If your heart rate is over 80, while resting, you are in very poor shape. So that means if your heart rate at resting is slow, that is a sign of a strong heart and good health.

By reducing your heart rate, you will reduce the amount of work your heart needs to do.
